Pea Shoot Farm

Yangbing Farm

The Slow Food Cycle Tour of Agassiz is featuring some farms that are opening their doors to the public for that day only.  One of these farms is Yangbing Farms, that was, up until recently, a farm that was one of the best kept secrets in town.

Yangbing Farms is a small family farm using top quality Canadian seed for their fresh salad-ready pea shoots.

No one in Agassiz really knew what was happening in the yellow barns on McCallum Road, when one day Wei Yang showed up at a council meeting with a large bagful of pea sprouts.  He put a handful in front of each councillor and requested permission to have another building on his site to help with his expanding business.  Who knew that pea sprouts were being grown there?  Everyone was surprised—however, typical of niche market farms, this was a very successful farm that was growing quietly in their midst.

One of the most unique features of agriculture in the Fraser Valley is the number and variety of farms supplying niche markets.  This is one of the big areas of agriculture opportunity in the Fraser Valley—growing food specifically for an ethnic population or ethnic restaurants or other specialty markets.  We have such a diversity of people each with their special food preferences, and a valley that is so rich in agriculture amenities that it can accommodate a very wide diversity of crops.  The synergy makes for a bustling niche market sector that almost always operates under the radar—it is hard to find these farms and figure out what amazing things they do.  Yangbing farms is an excellent example of such a farm and it is privilege to have the opportunity to tour this farm and talk to the owners of this farm on the day of the Slow Food Cycle Tour.

Take advantage of the opportunity to visit this farm and solve the mystery of the yellow barns.  Explore how pea sprouts are grown, and talk with Wei Yang about his farm and his marketing adventures.

Take a rest under the shady trees on the farm yard while you sample 2 or 3 different ways to prepare pea shoots.  You can purchase take-home packs for your own creations.  The farm is located at 6340 McCallum Road.
