The Dairy Classroom

April 18

The Mobile Dairy Classroom Experience

The Mobile Dairy Classroom Experience is a mobile milking parlour that brings agricultural education to the community. The presentation features a real dairy cow being milked just as it would be on the farm. The process of milk production, from the corn field all the way to the processing plant, is discussed during the presentation. Come and learn why dairy cows are such amazing animals and where your milk comes from!

Dairy is one of BC’s top ranked agricultural sectors with just under 600 dairy farms across the province. The majority of the dairy farms are within the Fraser Valley and almost all of the fluid milk that we drink is produced and processed locally. In BC, all dairy farms are family owned and often are passed through the family from generation to generation.

BC’s dairy farmers strive to accommodate a high level of animal comfort on their farms. You can ask any farmer; a happy cow makes more, better quality milk! And unlike the US, dairy cows across Canada are never treated with any growth hormones.

The MDCE travels to many shows, and soon to schools, throughout BC delivering milking demonstrations.

The Dairy Classroom program is coordinated by Chilliwack resident, Daryl Cherry. Daryl was raised on a Dairy Farm in Mt. Lehman. From 1964 to 1996 Daryl has owned and operated Cherry Farms Ltd., a Dairy Farm, in partnership with his father. Daryl has been the coordinator of the Abbotsford Agrifair Dairy Classroom since 1998 and has been working with the Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation to do demonstration at schools and other events around the province. Daryl is also involved with 4H activities and is the Leader at the Matsqui 4-H Holstein Club.

Dairy Classroom demonstrations, including milking of the cow, will be held at the Kitsilano Community Centre and are scheduled for 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
