Farmhouse Natural Cheeses

April 18

A goat and cow dairy farm

Farmhouse Natural Cheeses is a goat and cow dairy farm in beautiful Agassiz, BC, approximately one hour east of the Port Mann Bridge in the eastern Fraser Valley. The Farm is owned and operated by the Boyes family and who also make a variety of handmade cheeses onsite at their cheese shop.

The farm was operated as a regular dairy farm, supplying milk to the fluid market, until the decision was made to diversify and start making cheese onsite in 2003. Their cheese is available directly from the farm, through cheese shops and restaurants throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan as well as through online ordering on their website. Cheese maker Debra Amrein-Boyes will also be installing a wood fired oven bakery onsite in the near future.

The Boyes family farm is 35 acres with 120 acres rented elsewhere in Agassiz. They produce their own forages (corn and grass) for animal feed and graze their goats and cows outside while the weather is nice. The farm milks approximately 20 cows and 120 goats. The dairy herd consists of the black and white Holstein cows as well as the less common Brown Swiss and Guernsey cows. The different breeds of cows produce just the right kind of milk ideal for cheese making. All of the milk for the cheese making is supplied directly from the goats and cows at the farm.

Farm House Cheeses offers farm tours from May to September by appointment. They also host cheese making workshops. In December the farm hosts an annual Christmas pageant to benefit a charity featuring the farm animals raised at the farm.  They are also a featured farm on the Slow Food Cycle Tour Agassiz held in August (for info on last year’s event go here ).
