Glen Valley Organic Farm Cooperative
April 18
The Glen Valley Organic Farm Cooperative purchased their stunning Fraser Valley farm in 1998 in an effort to preserve and organically farm the land. The farm’s goals are not only to grow food, but also to educate the public about sustainable agriculture and stewardship of the land. Located in Abbotsford, the farm currently supports two separate farming enterprises; one produces a variety of fruits and vegetables, the second raises laying hens for eggs and grows salad greens. A small goatherd provides milk for farm residents. This 50-acre farm consists of over 10 acres of Class 1 and 2 soil, 25 acres of peat bottom land, 8 acres of mixed forest, with the remainder containing the farm house and other buildings, apple orchard and gardens. The co-op leases land and facilities to individuals who wish to farm, and who endorse to their principles. Lessees must be shareholders in the co-op. There are approximately 70 shareholders.
What they grow: The fertile soil of Glen Valley Farm’s bottom land supports the growth of a wide variety of vegetables, while tomatoes are raised in a cold frame on higher ground. Thirty different heritage varieties of apples grow in the farm’s orchard, and a small flock of laying hens provides eggs for sale.
Where they sell: Glen Valley Organic Farm’s produce is sold at various Farmers Markets throughout the lower mainland. It is also sold through boxes of various home delivery services in the Lower Mainland. Many of the farm’s products are featured on menus in restaurants throughout the region. Bulk sales of most items are available on request. Please phone ahead for direct farm sales.
The farm philosophy: As a cooperative they are dedicated to supporting sustainable food production and welcome anyone interested in leasing land at Glen Valley Farm. They are working to keep farmland affordable to those wishing to make a living farming, and through this, to maintain a long term supply of healthy, sustainably-produced food. They also hope to help keep farming skills alive in this age of high tech, and help link eaters with their food system.
