Kitsilano Farms
April 18
Meet Craig Heighway, Chief Pitchfork Operator of Kitsilano Farms. This farm is an urban farm in the heart of Vancouver where top quality organic vegetables are harvested from urban gardens. The farm has been created by piecing together a collection of backyard gardens around the Kitsilano neighbourhood and other parts of the west side. The people who own these properties provide Kitsilano Farms with the space to grow organic produce that can be taken to market. Kitsilano Farms also sells a weekly subscription box, known as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, also called Community Shared Agriculture.
With their CSA program, they can grow for a set number of harvest shareholders who subscribe at the beginning of the year. Everyone shares in the bounty of the harvest throughout the growing season, assuming of course that mother nature is willing. This provides financial support for the farmers early in the spring when it is most needed. In return, the farm shares the fruits of an abundant and diverse harvest. In this way, the farm and CSA members form a network of mutual support.
