You will not want to miss these special “Scheduled Presentations” that will be taking place at the Kitsilano Community Center and at the Family Activity Center at the Britannia Community Center.
Presentations from the farmers at the Kitsilano Community Center:
Dairy Classroom—will be giving their presentation at 11:00, 1;00 and 3:00, situated at the parking lot behind the recreation complex at the Kitsilano Community Center. You will learn about how milk is produced, get to meet real live cows and see how a cow is cared for and milked. . The Fraser Valley has some of the best dairy herds in the world, and you get to learn first hand here, from Daryl Arnold how the best dairying is done.
Poultry Classroom--- is an interactive, continuous flow display located at Kitsilano Community Center. You will see an exact replica of chicken barns, and see the stages of a chicken that is used for meat, right from the laying of the egg, through to the raising of the baby chicks through to full grown adults. You will get to meet Art Penner, who has been raising chickens for your table for over twenty years as he walks you through this fascinating exhibit.
Public talks at the Family Activity Center at the Britannia Community Center:
11:00 – Bruce Wisbey “Thirty years of Growing the Best Vegetables for Local Markets in the Fraser Valley using Integrated Pest Management”:
BRUCE WISBEY is one of our finest vegetable farmers. He was raised on a vegetable farm, took a degree in agriculture at UBC and worked at the Ministry of Agriculture for several years as he was establishing his farm. He will give a talk on his experiences growing vegetables for the local markets and on how he manages disease and pests in his crops.
12:00 – Bob Hopcott “The Story of Hopcott Meats”
BOB HOPCOTT is a top beef producer. He sells his own beef that has been raised with no hormones or additives and dry ages his beef for maximum taste and tenderness. Learn about how the best beef is raised from the expert himself.
1:00 – Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust “ Wildlife, Soil and Farm Conservation”.
Learn about DELTA FARMLAND AND WILDLIFE TRUST as they pursue their mission to promote the preservation of farmland and associated wildlife habitat on the Fraser River Delta through sustainable farming and land stewardship.
Interactive activities that farmers will be presenting:
Grow your own potato: FORSTBAUER FAMILY NATURAL FOOD FARM at both the Kitsilano Community Center and the Britannia Community Center will be offering seed potatoes for children to plant. Children can plant their potatoe in a bucket, and grow it over the summer. Then they can bring their mature potatoes back to the Forstbauer’s stall at the Farmer’s Market to get them weighed at the end of the summer.
Learn about beekeeping: HONEYVIEW FARMS at the Britannia Community Center will have bee keeper clothing on hand, so you can discover what it is like to wear a bee keeper’s hat. They will also have an observation hive with them so you can see how bee communityies work to make honey. Learn all about this fascinating farm worker—the honeybee from Honeyview Farms—BC’s largest apiary.
