Chilliwack River Valley Natural Honey
July 24, 2011
Delicious honey from the local wild flowers
Chiliwack River Valley Natural Honey has been raising bees for over 30 years. It all began in 1975 when Agnes Coutts’s started pollinating a few Raspberry bushes. The company grew and in 1999, the farm moved to its present location on Adams Road. Shirley and Richard Pye started to work with Agnes and Jack and in early 2005 they purchased the farm and company.
For the Slow Food cycle tour, Richard will be smoking the bees and opening the hive at 11 am and 2 pm. All slow food participants will have the chance to enter a draw for the chance to spend an afternoon with the bees and Richard and take home your own fresh sweet treats. While they have scheduled two hive openings, Richard will be here all day and will demo as soon as we get a group of people. Last year there was a demo almost every 30 minutes.
Today, honey sales are a now a major part of a flourishing business that produces a full range of bee-related products. Shirley and Richard move their bee hives to different flowering meadows, which not only pollinates the flowers but also produces a very distinctive flavour of honey from each location. Everything at the farm is done by hand, from labelling and pouring honey, to rolling and pouring 100% pure beeswax candles. Their honey is sold in numerous stores in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver area and from their stand at Granville Island Public Market. The farm is certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and is also certified Kosher.
Besides pollinating for local berry farmers, Richard and Shirley also teach people about bees and honey. Visiting their store is like stepping back to a more relaxed time. Come and experience the sweet taste of naturally flavoured unpasteurized honey while reading about bees and the beekeeping calendar.
