GROWING HEIRLOOM VARIETY TOMATOES
Tuesday, May 27th 7-9pm
Sponsored in part by the Italian Cultural Centre.
Why pay $6.00/lb. for heirloom tomatoes at some local grocery stores (one tomato is usually one pound) when you can grow some yourself!
Join Sharon Hanna, Slow Food Member, avid gardener, coordinator of the Queen Alexandra Elementary School Garden and writer for GardenWise and Gardening Life magazines to learn how to grow some of your own tomatoes and other garden veggies.
When: Tuesday, May 27th from 7pm - 9pm
Where: Italian Cultural Centre - Room #5
3075 Slocan Street, Vancouver
Cost: FREE. Donations accepted for the Windermere Secondary School Food Garden Pilot Project - a Slow Food Vancouver Initiative.
RSVP to
Share some of your tomato harvest at this summer’s 6th Annual Slow Food Tomato Potluck Picnic.
Sharon will show you how to allocate part of your lawn area (a sunny spot) to grow food, using the ‘lasagna’ method of gardening. After creating your lasagna garden, you can plant immediately and enjoy a harvest this season.
She will also have heirloom tomato seedlings for you to purchase to get you started.
Reasons to ”Grow Some Food”:
-to eat SLO (Seasonal, Local, Organic)
-home grown food tastes wonderful and freshly harvested food contains more nutrients
-to connect with nature and practice “being in the moment” while weeding or digging!
-less transporting of food benefits the environment
-gardening provides physical exercise.
