A Call for Action
What are you doing Saturday, October 24th?
Why:
This month, over 70 of the world’s poorest countries walked out of climate negotiations currently taking place in Bangkok while Canada was speaking because they felt that our government was undermining effective negotiations.
Canadians overwhelmingly want to play a leading role in the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference which takes place in Copenhagen this December, where the future of the Kyoto Protocol will be decided. It is vital that wealthy countries like ours take the lead not only in setting targets but also acting on them. Our current government seems intent on doing neither.
When:
On Saturday October 24th, we invite you to join millions of people from around the world calling for action. Come together with family, friends, co-workers and neighbours to send a strong message to Prime Minister Harper: give Canadians and the people of the world hope by demanding real climate action in Copenhagen!
Rain or shine, don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the largest world-wide call for climate action ever seen, with over 3000 events in over 170 countries!
Here’s what’s happening in Vancouver:
1. At Noon, there will be an opening ceremony on the Cambie Street Bridge followed by a parade across the bridge and along Pacific Boulevard to Science World.
2. By 1 PM, everyone will be enjoying a festival of music, performance, workshops, advocacy and celebration at Science World.
3. At 7 PM, at Christ Church Cathedral (690 Burrard Street at West Georgia next to the Burrard Skytrain Station) take a closer look at how Canada is contributing to the Global Climate Crisis and what we can do about it here in BC.
Speakers will include Professor Bill Rees, father of the ‘ecological footprint’, representatives from the Wilderness Committee, The David Suzuki Foundation and Greenpeace as well as BC First Nations representatives struggling with resource extraction issues. There will also be video presentations from David Suzuki and Bill McKibben from 350.org as well as music and art from special guests.
