A New Product Joins the Canadian Ark of Taste
News from the Ark of Taste
A new Canadian product joins the Ark of Taste: the Gravenstein apple from Nova Scotia.
It is thanks to Charles Prescott, a farmer, keen gardener and horticulturist from Halifax, that this apple, originally from the town of Gravenstein in Holstein, Germany, came to Nova Scotia about 200 years ago.
The Gravenstein has won popularity mainly due to its versatility: it is delicious if eaten fresh, excellent for cooking and also suitable for making cider.
In the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, the variety grown is the Old Fashioned Gravenstein, with a green skin tending to yellow overlaid with red stripes. The apples keep well for several months.
With this new Ark member, the products of the Canadian Ark—coordinated by Mara Jerningan— now number six.
