Support your local artisanal baker

The world is experiencing a serious wheat shortage, and the price of wheat has been driven to a thirty-year high. By June of this year, the International Grains Council has estimated that wheat supplies will drop to their lowest levels in over 25 years.

What has caused this shortage? In addition to two years of drought in Australia, grain farmers around the world have been switching to other crops, such as corn or canola, to sell for bio-fuels. The sad result is that our local bakers have seen the price of flour double and triple in recent months. Florian, from Transylvania Bread in the 3400 block of West Broadway says that the price of a bag of flour will probably quadruple very soon!

Can you imagine our city without fine artisan bakers like Florian? Get out and support your favourite local baker before it’s too late!
