IN SEASON IN APRIL

Asparagus

Spring is here, and with it comes a growing variety of locally-grown produce. Be sure to enjoy our asparagus while you can - it has a relatively short season!

Did you know…
Asparagus derives its name from the ancient Greeks, but it was the Romans who were hooked on this vegetable! They documented detailed growing instructions, they enjoyed eating it in season, and they were the first to preserve it by freezing. Asparagus was so prized a delicacy in ancient Rome that it was rushed by chariot to the Alps where it was deep frozen for six months to last until the Feast of Epicurius.
James Barber, Vancouver food writer and chef, is a fan of locally-grown asparagus. Read his tips and hints to create your own asparagus festival!
