2010 is the UN Year of Biodiversity and the year that Slow Food is hosting Terra Madre 2010.
Terra Madre Fund Campaign: Locally, we are raising funds to send representatives from our food communities to Terra Madre, October 2010 in Italy. At the last Terra Madre in 2008, over 7,000 farmers from 153 countries met for four days to discuss sustainable food production & biodiversity. We aim to make farming a viable career option. See links, below on the right side to donate and/or to get more information.
Why Join the Slow Food Movement? People ask, “What do I get for my membership?” You are supporting an international ‘eating local’ movement.
Our mission is:
* to defend biodiversity in our food supply;
* to spread taste education;
* to connect producers with co-producers through events and initiatives.
Eating Local
* Food is a right for all
* All people have the right to decide what they grow and eat (food sovereignty)
* Small-scale agriculture in local communities is the way of the future
* Agricultural, food and cultural biodiversity must be preserved
* Agriculture and the environment must be seen as being strongly interdependent (agriculture cannot be considered simply as an economic sector, producing materials subject to the laws of supply and demand)
* Trade must be fair, supportive and sustainable
By joining, you are showing your support for the principles and values of Slow Food.
Slow Food is a non-profit, member-supported organization that was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
We believe that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.
